37 Signals on Functional Specs

09.13.2006

Here's a quote to hang up on your wall:

Functional specs force you to make the most important decisions when you have the least information. You know the least about something when you begin to build it. The more you build it, the more you use it, the more you know it. That’s when you should be making decisions – when you have more information, not less.

Getting Real

Please note: I haven't read the darn book, I'm simply reacting to the quote. That said: while I agree with their basic ideas of keeping things small and worrying about scalability later, and rapid prototyping and iterating between users and designers/developers, as usual I think these clever lads have swallowed too much of their own kool-aid. My guess is that they're only considering their sorts of projects, and not those which benefit from an extensive requirements and specification process before a programmer ever lays eyes on the sucker. Just my 2p - now it's time to go read those free on-line chapters 8=} Zj
