Orwell on "keeping out of politics."

In our time, political speech and writing are largely the defense of the indefensible... The inflated style itself is a kind of euphemism. A mass of Latin words falls upon the facts like soft snow, blurring the outline and covering up all the details. The great enemy of clear language is insincerity. When there is a gap between one's real and one's declared aims, one turns as it were instinctively to long words and exhausted idioms, like a cuttlefish spurting out ink. In our age there is no such thing as "keeping out of politics." All issues are political issues, and politics itself is a mass of lies, evasions, folly, hatred, and schizophrenia.

Finally, Someone Says It

Wow, MSNBC's Keith Olbermann just said EXACTLY what needed to be said right now about Katrina.[requires quickitem] I don't know much about Olbermann, but this was the most refreshing take I have yet heard from TV news on the situation in New Orleans. Here's a preview from the transcript:

...having given our leaders what we know now is the week or so they need to get their act together, that period of editorial silence I mentioned, should come to an end.No one is suggesting that mayors or governors in the afflicted areas, nor the federal government, should be able to stop hurricanes. Lord knows, no one is suggesting that we should ever prioritize levee improvement for a below-sea-level city, ahead of $454 million worth of trophy bridges for the politicians of Alaska.

Typographical Ramblings on Palatino, and Impact

I'm experiementing with two "unusual" typefaces, and I must admit, I am liking the result. Actually, these typefaces are not unusual at all -- they are Impact for headers, and Palatino for body text. Palatino, in particular, is admired by the world of typographers for its elegance, and beauty. Yet, the dogma among web designers is to not stray from Georgia, Helvetica, Arial, Times, and Verdana -- however, I've checked browser support charts, and these two type faces seem to have widespread, if not virtually universal support.

Jackson Pollock: Male and Female

After I posted my last blog entry, I decided that I was really tired of my old color scheme. This painting, as it so happens, was the chief inspiration for my blog's new design/color scheme. Expect the design to evolve over the next few days.

"Labor Day"

Bill LumburgAccording to my sources, today is one of those unusual mondays where classes are out, banks are closed, and a few lucky bastards are off of work. Of course, according to my watch, it is 7:35 in the AM, and let me check -- yep, I'm up and awake. Hmmm, this would seem to suggest that I get to work all day, like I worked yesterday, and the day before that, and so forth in to infinity. This is particularly sick, as I work typically work from home/coffeeshops. This is not as relaxed as a situation as one might imagine.

Coming to Terms with Katrina

I'm a little overwhelmed at the moment -- hints I haven't been updating my blog. Beyond the several ongoing telecommunications policy, and community networking projects which I'm actively developing, I've just been outsourced to help with the information challenges that have been posed by Katrina.

Katrina -- that bitch.

Last Monday, I actually flew over Katrina on my way to Boston. In an odd foreshadowing of how our goverment responded, the pilot choose not to tell us that the giant, larger than life thunderheads which surrounded us was the hurricane. Once I arrived at my VISTA orientation, I was kept busy for all waking hours of the day monday through friday. Long story short, I didn't really get a chance to read the news reports until yesterday. The crisis in New Orleans seems to shed a very unflattering light on what a barbaric, racist, and utterly uncaring of a society we live in. America as a whole, it would seem, can only be brought together by the drum beats of war.

You didn't ask for this position, but...

ruffian

Jessica, my head source on amusing craiglist personals sent this new gem. Writes tough guy:

"Come to Hungary for a while and marry me.You'll get $. I'll get greencard. No matter how you look like just be under 36. Reply for details with pic!"

Sorry, if you're 37, the deal is off.

My Coming Monument to Workoholism (and steady diet of government cheese)

This three day Orientation to Americorps VISTA, I can say, without reservations, was the best networking I've ever done in my life. I literally can't begin to write a description of our coming plans. Short end of the story is that were at a point where the tools are there, the expertise and experience is there, and the commitment is there -- and we're ready to change the history of community technology

Another very encouraging sign is that I've already received some possible, and inticing job offers for after my year is over. Unfortunately, there were a few unwelcome suprises... Mainly, I will not be able to generate any outside income while working as a VISTA. Some things the corporation is willing ot be flexiable with. This is not one of them. I'm not yet sure what I'm going to do about that detail -- but I will have to do something, as their monthly stipend will not cover my budget (unless I decide to get a credit card and get into debt... apparently, its fine to spend money you don't have?!). Its funny -- I understand the benefit of living at the same income of the people that you might be working for -- however, I'm not sure how I feel about requiring us to live on the absolute, not a dollar to spare before failing to pay rent, bills, and food sort of edge. I've spent the last 7 months there as I've developed my independent contracting business, and its a bit -- I don't know the adjective.

Wow. MSN "Beta" Looks Freaking Horrible

Awww... What's wrong Microsoft? Having trouble getting your pages to display correctly in both firefox, and MS Explorer 6?

But seriously folks... only Microsoft would call a site that displays so horridly in firefox a "beta" site.

They Probably Owned a Liquor Store

family photos

Who are these people, and where did they come from. The finders and guardians of this treasure, Houseplant Picture Studio explain:

...To make a medium story almost non-existent, we purchased two hefty photo albums filled-to-the-brim with family photos of a hitherto unknown family. We haven't yet taken the time to look at the back of every photo to try to figure out the family's name. We have noticed that a lot of the photos feature family members standing in orin front of a nice-looking, fully-stocked liquor store. It's quite obvious that the family pictured in the photo albums owned the liquor store. HOWEVER... It's entirely possible that the "unknown family" simply liked having their photos taken in and around the liquor store.
