You have a wonderful website and thank you enormously for going to so much trouble. It is grately appreciated.I also respect you, as you are obviously an excellent pianist yourself.
I felt some of the comments made about Ashkenazy's Cadensa and technique were very misleading. People are always entitled to give their oppinion which I respect.
I worked some years ago in an orchestra and worked under Ashkenazy both as a conductor and when he was soloist.I assure you and everybody else,Ashkenazy had phenominal technique on the piano.I also respect his interpretation of Rachmaninov. He has a very deep interpretation. He deliberately plays the cadensa you were talking about slower than many.Rachmaninov was a fantastic pianist; but to be honest I feel he actually rushes that cadensa almost too much. He had an extraordinary dry wit.Remember what he said to Kreisler in a New York concert. Kreisler asking during the performance: "Where am I?" Rachmaninov answering: "In the Carnegie Hall." I am actually using my wife's email.
