Franz Liszt: Etude de Concert No 3 "Un Sospiro"

02.25.2005

Composed by Franz Liszt

Peter Aberle, pianist

Listen to MP3

Notes: Among serious classical pianists, the following claim is almost a dogma: Franz Liszt was the greatest pianist that ever lived (1831-1886). In this recording, Peter Aberle plays one of Liszt's more difficult etudes, "Un Sospiro". IMHO, "Un Sospiro" is the most beautiufl work that Liszt ever wrote -- and don't forget that Liszt is the best pianist who has ever lived (at least according to the old guard classical pianists). I guess what I am saying is take a listen. Aberle does an excellent job, btw.

Kiss is sweeter than barnstormer

I honestly agree that Christina Kiss is great. I happened to visit her web site and listen to sample clips with no expectations. But my... It was fantastic though the recording quality is not first class. She is one my newly discovered gems in the town together with Philip Thomson, Arnaldo Cohen and Nadejda Vlaeva.

And I also agree that Argerich is always rushing. I don't like her approach really. Too fast, too aggressive and too much bravura even when she plays Chopin concerto!

dont forget chopin

chopin is another one of the great pianists of the 19th century, he just wasn't as charasmatic as liszt.

sorry. for spel ling.i have a vision problem

That should be all the guys <:-))

Liszt is great...but

Liszt actuallly live 20 years longer than you are giving him credit.  He was born in 1811, not 1831.

And although this is a complex work, Liszts excellent pedogogical knowledge of the piano and piano technique allows fairly reasonable execution of this piece.

And Pedro is right on...Argerich always plays romantic music TOO fast which takes away some of the beauty of the pieces she records.

And Liszt is ONE of the greatest pianist of the 19th century...lets not forget Clara Schumann.

Gorgeous

Sigh. What a transportive piece of music. One of the first music rock stars. matchmaker for Chopin, father-in-law of Wagner... whatta guy. Who is the best Liszt interpreter today, Nick, in your opinion?

Don't forget Jorge Bolet

To me he gives the best all round redition of Liszt. It's a real shame he only became famous in later years and there aren't manyh early recordings. Of course there are the usual suspects like Horowitz, Richter, Argerich ...

I think that the tiny woman

I think that the tiny woman named Christina Kiss does the best interpretations of Liszts piano pieces. She is doing a series in New York that will finish in 2012, in which she will play every one of Liszts piano compositions.
